derailed

i was able to talk tim into walking with me on this sabbath afternoon by saying "we can take the pickup." we walked a new segment of the trail where it crosses Gaston, southwest of our house (our road is Epperson, and the roads are alphabetical). we headed south, crossed a few bridges, and even found a nice picnic spot. tim was ready to turn back before i was, so i convinced him to come just as far as the next bridge. it turned out to be well worth the walk. the bridge that we came to was more of a trestle, not just a short wooden bridge over a shallow ditch like so many of the others. there was a decent river flowing beneath it with enough water that you could even play poohsticks if you wanted to. what interested us more than poohsticks were the train cars buried in the bank. there were at least a dozen of them, all stripped down and lined up more or less vertically on the edge of the river. they may have all been underwater at one time, before things got dry. did the train derail, or is this what they do with old train cars? it was very unexpected and odd. we climbed down and did a little exploring, and smokey almost fell down a hole, and then we said, "hmm," and headed home.
